I use screen as the shell on my machines I ssh into and as a side effect, it keeps timeouts from happening. Even if you do get disconnected, none of your jobs are stopped and it lets you “re-attach” to your session.

I love screen, should be in every shell user’s tool box.

Hmm, using screen as login shell has merit. I’ll have to look into that.
