Broken URLs

Sometime after WordPress 2.3 came out I switched from the add-on tag system that I had been using to native tagging in WordPress 2.3+. Unfortunately what I didn’t realize is that the URLs for tag pages would be different. To make it even worse, I only fixed this just now :-(

If you’ve been getting 404 error pages trying to find something on my blog sorry about that.

EditInPlace, New Version, New Home

It’s been 18 months since I first released the editinplace Javascript code. And many months since I’d really done anything new with it.

So I finally put together two things, a new version and new home for EditInPlace. First, the new home, editinplace.org. There’s documentation, a blog, downloads and forums. The main push for me to do this was to try out the forums. I’m still amazed at the number of people contacting me expressing interest in this, so I’m hoping that the forums will provide a better way for people to ask questions and get answers. If nothing else it moves from my inbox and out on the web, where Google can index it for all to see.

Next, a new version, 0.5.0. This is a rewrite based on the 0.3.3 code that uses more Prototype specific features. If you’ve used EIP before you’ll want to review the example.html and save.php files to see how things have changed in the new version. Nothing earth shattering, but it is different. You can get it now at the download page.

Go check it out and let me know what you think.

The Yahoo Service I Use The Most

I was thinking a little bit about the Yahoo/Google/Microsoft battles this morning. Sure, I almost always uses Google for search, but then it dawned on me that there is a Yahoo site that I use on a regular basis (if not daily, darn close to it), del.icio.us. It is far and away the Yahoo service that I use the most. Coming in second would have to be Flickr, but that is a pretty distant second.

It has been almost two years since Yahoo purchased del.icio.us. And more than a year since I’ve seen any talk about how much traffic they get. It would be nice to get an anniversary update.

Kris Kennaway on FreeBSD 7

Last month Kris Kennaway spoke about FreeBSD 7 (pdf). Lots of details about how FreeBSD 7 came about and what you can expect to see when 7.0 finally gets released.

Perhaps the most interesting part though was the SMP focused case study involving MySQL and PostgreSQL on pages 10 through 19. The numbers for 7.0 compared to previous versions of FreeBSD on transactions per second on multi-CPU systems is really impressive. The ULE scheduler gives a huge boost over the traditional 4BSD scheduler. Looks like ULE will become the default scheduler sometime during the 7.x life time (7.1 perhaps?). You want to see CPUs really put to use? Check out page 13.

I was rather surprised to see the MySQL numbers come in so much lower than the PostgreSQL numbers. There seems to be a MySQL specific problem that limits how well it can scale across multiple CPUs.

Start of the Christmas Season in Utah

Having the Christmas season start earlier and earlier in the year is one of those things that many people like to gripe about. At least that is how I remember it being in California.

In Utah the Christmas season starts early. I don’t mean a little bit early, I mean EARLY.

The first signs of the Christmas season I saw here was back in September. I was on a routine trip to Home Depot when I came across an entire section of Christmas season products. Artificial trees, lights, decorations, etc. This surprised me, but since it seemed like a relatively isolated incident I didn’t think too much of it.

Then November 1st hit. The day after Halloween we had Christmas music started playing on the radio, with at least one station playing nothing but. People started putting up Christmas lights, wreaths on the door, that sort of thing.

What’s most interesting about this to me is that it doesn’t seem out of place here. Perhaps it is because this is my first winter/Christmas in Utah, maybe it is because it snows here (although the last few days have actually been nice and warm), who knows, but for what ever reason having the Christmas season start on November 1st feels just right.

That isn’t to say that we are forgetting about Thanksgiving. I still plan on putting on a few pounds by the end of this week :-)
