rakaz – Enabling the debug menu on Safari for Windows – Simon Willison pointed out the “Turn Off Site-Specific Hacks” debug menu option. I wonder how many site specific hacks Safari has by default?

New Windows Browser: Safari
Apple’s web browser, Safari, is now available for Windows. Beta, of course.
Looking back at the history of Apple software that runs on Windows, it seems to me to usually be born out of necessity. QuickTime has been around on Mac and Windows for awhile (early 90s?). More recently (2003) we have iTunes of course. Both of these I think Apple needed to have a Windows versions, QuickTime in order to get people to use it and iTunes to support their growing iPod market.
But Safari doesn’t seem to fit this model. I don’t see a compelling NEED for Apple to have done this. That might be a good sign though. Instead of doing things they need to do, they are starting to do things because they can. This could very well be the biggest sign yet that Apple is potentially capable of competing with Microsoft.
Don’t take that as a ringing endorsement of Safari on Windows, only time will tell if it actually gets any significant mind share. Right now this seems to be mostly a battle of third place, Safari versus Opera.
