Timex Sinclair 1000
Saw Slashdot mention the 25th Anniversary of the Sinclair ZX Spectrum. This brought on a sudden flash back to my youth when I had a Timex Sinclair 1000. I even had the 16K add on module!
My how times have changed. Yes, I’m starting to feel old.
Friday the 13th
I’m not one to normally make a big deal about Friday the 13th. But this one is going to be different, for me at least. Friday, April 13th 2007 is my last day at the Office of Water Programs (OWP) at CSU Sacramento. This will be a big change for me, a lot has happened over the last 8 years that I’ve worked there.
Everyone at OWP has been really nice about this transition. A big thank you to everyone at OWP that have made working there an enjoyable experience. The timing of my last day did end up being kind of strange since the 13th is also the birthday of my boss. Sorry Jim, I didn’t know it was going to work like that.
So at this point you are probably wondering what I’ll be doing after the 13th. On Monday (April 16) I’ll be working full time for Automattic, the folks behind WordPress (and WordPress.com). I’m excited to be working on new stuff with Matt and company.
I suspect I’ll be talking a bit more about what I’ll be doing in the future as more of it becomes public. I did some searching and all of the pieces are already out there, mentioned on different websites and indexed by Google. If you knew how to connect them all together you’d already know what I’ll be working on
Friday I’ll be wrapping things up at OWP and on Monday diving into Automattic.
Quotes
Some lines are just too good to pass up.
Ted Boren at NorthTemple on commit privs:
The best way to keep developers from breaking the build is to take away their rights to commit code.
~ Just overheard from our QA team, tongue deeply in cheek
Zunester on licensing fees, emphasis mine, via Daring Fireball:
WMA – Microsoft’s audio format. Adopted by most mp3 player skus (but not by most mp3 player units, thanks to the iPod..). Freely licensable for a low fee. Also associated with WMDRM, which is supported by playsforsure devices. High compression efficiency, good compatibility story, but not as good as mp3’s.
I love a good laugh in the middle of the day.
MacBook Pro
Picked up a new 15 inch MacBook Pro today. Yeah, I’m late to the party. My 3+ year old PowerBook G4 will likely be going into retirement.
This is my first Intel based Mac so I’m looking forward to playing with Parallels.
MySQL Interface to Amazon S3
Mark Atwood wrote a MySQL Interface to Amazon S3. Some basic functionality is there, but this is bleeding edge stuff.
This is a really neat idea, abstract the S3 storage and provide methods that people already use to store their data. Someone needs to take this to the next level and really push it. MySQL or Amazon should latch on to this (hire/contract Mark if they haven’t already) and really ramp it up.
Mac Backup To Dreamhost
When I posted a brief comparison to Amazon S3 and Dreamhost one thing I didn’t do was suggest how one could actually use Dreamhost in a similar way as S3, like backups. For S3 Jungle Disk is one option for backups. Now there is a how to on backing up your Mac to Dreamhost (part 2).
Another approach would involve using MacFUSE with the ssh module. Have I mentioned how much I’d like to see Apple include MacFUSE in OS X by default? Well, I would, a lot.
What this approach doesn’t do that Jungle Disk does is encrypt the files on your remote backup. But on the other hand S3 has a file size limit of 5GB, as long as it isn’t between 2GB and 4GB. So really S3 on supports files sizes from 1-2GB and 4-5GB. Each method has pros and cons.
