Blogging: The New Get Rich Quick Scheme
I should have seen this coming. Tapping into the desires of so many to be rich without actually working, blogging will become the next big get rich quick scheme (if it hasn’t already). You know the drill, commercials at 2:30am promoting seminars where people will learn the secrets of making money by blogging. For a mere $29.95 you’ll receive a kit showing you step by step how to become rich just by using your computer and the Internet (yes, with a capital I, silly Wired).
It has already started, http://blogforfunandprofit.blogware.com/

Comment Spam Compiled and Interpreted: Some more thoughts on dealing with comment spam from Harry Fuecks. Just remember, if you aren’t talking about a way to prevent comment spam from ever entering your system (blog, whatever), then you aren’t really talking about a solution to the problem.
Autocomplete CPAN Search: I wonder what other places this will popup now that Google has made it a little more common (via Jeremy).
Skype on Mac OS X: A Hands-On Approach: I’ve only tried Skype with some folks at work, just so I could see it in action. Voice went well, but file transfers were 14.4k modem speed.
Configuring Knoppix for Dad’s Workstations: Jeremy‘s notes on configuring Knoppix for a workstation.
Apple To Sell Sub-$500 System
According to Think Secret Apple is going to offer a sub-$500 system. I wouldn’t have seen this coming, but I could see this having a lot of potential. The specs are roughly the same as a 12″ G4 PowerBook Combo-Drive model, minus a screen. The article mentions that the main motivation behind this move is the success of the iPod. I’ll go out on a limb and say that this will be a smash success beyond anything that we’ve seen with the iPod.
All of this assumes that the rumor is true
DVD Commentary Disclaimers
Many people in our families got DVDs for Christmas, nothing new there, they are a common gift. In watching a couple of them I noticed something different, disclaimers about the contents of the commentary track on the DVD. I thought this was rather odd, why would one need a disclaimer for the commentary? Perhaps folks are making comments that have ticked off some people. I’m rather surprised the commentary tracks would not have to be “approved” by the studio/producer/MPAA/etc before making it on to the DVD. Is the DVD commentary the last vestige of complete control for the director (or who ever is doing the commentary)?
Del.icio.us Is Down
This could be a problem, Del.icio.us is only returning 503 Service Unavailable to all requests. I was trying out a couple of searches and then nothing. Looks like it gave up around 10:25am, hopefully it will be back soon.
UPDATE 28 Dec 2004 @ 11:15am: Looks like they are back up now.
UPDATE 28 Dec 2004 @ 12:15pm: The search feature still seems completely broken.

National Treasure
Sarah and I just got back from seeing National Treasure. It seemed like an interesting idea for a movie, although I wasn’t sure that this was the kinda of movie that Nicolas Cage would do well in. I was pleasantly surprised, it was a good movie, with a reasonable performance from Cage.

I, Cringely-Yes, Virginia, There Is Life After Visual Basic: Cringely talks about RealBasic. I’ve looked at RealBasic from a distance for awhile now. Normally I’d not be too in something like this, but the ability to support Windows, Mac and Linux is so attractive it can’t be ignored.
